Why Lifestyle Medicine Might Be the Missing Piece in Your Health Story (And Ours)

What if the most powerful thing you could do for your long-term health wasn't a new supplement or a stricter diet, but a fundamentally different way of thinking about why you got unwell in the first place?
That's the question at the heart of lifestyle medicine. And it's one that's been shaping the way we think about couples health coaching at The Better Together Method.
Something We Want to Share
Jo here. As many of you know, I came to health coaching through my own experience of reversing Type 2 diabetes, navigating cancer recovery, and finally asking the question I'd avoided for years: what was actually driving my poor health in the first place?
The answer, it turned out, wasn't a single thing. It was the whole picture: chronic stress, poor sleep, a diet that barely registered as nourishment, and movement that had quietly dropped off the agenda somewhere around 2010.
That's why I'm currently undertaking the Certificate of Prescribing Lifestyle Medicine (PLM), delivered through the Health Coaches Academy and Practice Unbound. It's a rigorous, evidence-based programme that's deepening my understanding of how lifestyle factors drive -and reverse - chronic disease. Emma is every bit as enthusiastic about where this is heading, and once I've qualified, she'll be getting to grips with it too. Between us, we're committed to making lifestyle medicine a central thread in everything we do at The Better Together Method.
This is one of the most valuable things I've done professionally.
Over the coming months, I'll be working with a small number of case study clients as part of my training. If you've ever been curious about what working with us looks like, this could be a wonderful opportunity to experience it first-hand. More on that below.
So What Is Lifestyle Medicine, Exactly?
Lifestyle medicine is a clinical and evidence-based approach that addresses the root causes of chronic disease through six core pillars:
Nutrition - eating in a way that supports long-term health, not just short-term results
Movement - regular physical activity tailored to your life, not someone else's
Sleep - quality rest as a non-negotiable foundation, not a luxury
Stress regulation - managing your nervous system, not just your diary
Avoiding harmful substances - alcohol, smoking, and the things we often minimise
Social connection - the relationships we build and sustain, including the ones at home
These pillars aren't separate boxes to tick. They're deeply interconnected - which is exactly why addressing just one of them rarely produces lasting change. Improve sleep, and stress becomes more manageable. Reduce stress, and food choices get easier. Move more together, and connection grows. The whole thing is a system.
Why This Matters for Couples
Here's where it gets interesting for us at The Better Together Method.
Lifestyle medicine was largely designed for individual patients. But couples don't live individual lives. You share a kitchen, a bedroom, an evening routine, and often a stress load. When one of you is struggling with poor sleep, the other feels it. When stress spikes for one partner, the dynamic between you shifts. You are, quite literally, each other's environment.
That shared environment is both the challenge and the opportunity.
Research consistently shows that health behaviours are socially contagious - we unconsciously adopt the habits of the people closest to us. Couples who approach lifestyle change together are significantly more likely to sustain it. One study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that when one partner made a positive health change, the other was far more likely to follow suit.
That's not coincidence. That's partnership working as it should.
Applying lifestyle medicine principles through a couples lens means we can work on the whole system, not just one half of it. We can look at your shared routines, your collective stress triggers, what you're eating and when, how you're sleeping and why it might not be working, and what movement looks like in the context of two busy lives. And we can make changes that actually stick, because you're doing them together.
What This Looks Like in Practice
In our coaching programmes, lifestyle medicine principles aren't a theoretical framework we discuss in the abstract. They're the foundation of everything we do.
A session might involve looking at your evening cortisol pattern and how your shared wind-down routine is - or isn't - supporting better sleep. It might involve exploring what's really behind the 9pm snacking habit, or why the gym plan you set in January lasted three weeks. It might mean looking honestly at where stress is genuinely being managed and where it's just being suppressed.
The questions we ask are always oriented towards root causes, not quick fixes. In our experience, the couples who make real progress are the ones who understand why things have slipped, not just what to do differently.
An Invitation: Could You Be a Case Study Couple?
As part of my PLM training, I'm looking for a small number of couples willing to work with me on a case study basis over the coming months. This means you'd experience The Better Together Method first-hand, working through a structured programme with full coaching support, while I gather learning and insight to inform my continuing professional development.
This is a genuine opportunity to access our coaching at a significantly reduced rate, in exchange for your time, engagement, and honest feedback.
You might be a good fit if:
You're a couple who knows something needs to change but hasn't found the right support yet
One or both of you is dealing with stress, fatigue, weight concerns, poor sleep, or a sense of just not feeling well
You're open to exploring lifestyle as a root cause, not just a backdrop
You're willing to be reflective, consistent, and honest about what's working and what isn't
If this sounds like you, I'd love to hear from you.
Drop us a message via the contact page or book a complimentary Reset Session and mention that you're interested in the case study programme. We'll have a conversation and take it from there - no pressure, no obligation.
The Bigger Picture
Lifestyle medicine represents a meaningful shift in how we think about health: away from managing symptoms and towards understanding causes. For couples navigating midlife, busy careers, and the quiet accumulation of stress that comes with modern life, that shift can be genuinely life-changing.
We're excited to be bringing this evidence base more explicitly into our work. And we'd love for you to be part of it.
Because the evidence is clear: changing how you live works better when you do it together.
